Supongo que muchos de vosotros ya conoceréis la saga Etrian Odyssey, así que para los pocos desconocedores haré un breve resumen sobre el planteamiento de su mecánica. Todos los títulos de la saga son «dungeon crawlers» en primera persona, con combates por turnos, creados por Atlus para las consolas portátiles de Nintendo. El principal fin en ellos es explorar un laberinto, habitualmente de proporciones inmensas, dividido a su vez en infinidad de niveles que además agrupan distintos estratos, cada uno con un ecosistema distinto. Y por supuesto, dicho laberinto está por explorar, ¿y qué sucede siempre con los lugares inexplorados? que lógicamente no se nos suele ofrecer de inicio un mapa ni demasiados puntos de referencia sobre los que guiarnos.
Nosotros, como buenos exploradores que somos, nos lanzamos a la aventura con nuestro recién creado gremio y sus cinco personajes escogidos. Pero no todo es ir a ciegas. En la pantalla táctil de la consola los diseñadores han dejado a nuestra disposición las herramientas necesarias para crear nuestro propio mapa, algo indispensable. No solo será necesario rellenar el terreno a pisar, sino que además habrá eventos, sitios de cura, o posaderos donde guardar partida, todo junto a lugares de donde extraer recursos —necesarios para ganar dinero y crear nuevas armas y armaduras con ellos — e incluso trampas. Sin estas indicaciones, lo que es un juego de supervivencia para llegar al próximo nivel, acabaría en una muerte más que segura. Y creedme cuando os digo que el posadero no será nuestro amigo aunque podamos salvar el avance con él, cada cierto tiempo el precio de las curas aumentará y lo mismo ocurrirá con los precios para revivir a algún pobre aliado muerto.
Estamos ante uno de esos juegos en los que aprender a sobrevivir en el entorno del juego no es solo una opción. De hecho, en el juego existen monstruos similares a jefes de fase llamados «Formido Oppugnatura Exsequens» o para abreviar F.O.E. Estos campan a sus anchas por los mapas y casi siempre es necesario esquivarlos hasta que seamos suficientemente poderosos para acabar con ellos. La supervivencia ante estas criaturas, junto con los mapas, son los puntos fuertes del diseño pero a la vez su perdición. Tener que estudiar el comportamiento de los F.O.E. para abrir caminos ocultos en el mapa, ver cuando se paran para aprovechar y seguir tu camino, o que simplemente se queden quietos hasta que entremos en combate para asaltarnos por sorpresa, todo esto es genial para introducirse en la piel de exploradores ansiosos por descubrir más, y para sufrir levemente el miedo a un ataque desprevenido, pero el problema viene cuando la aleatoriedad de los eventos te juega una mala pasada. En cuestión de minutos podemos encontrarnos ante un combate contra enemigos normales medianamente fuertes y poco después toparnos con un encuentro aleatorio mientras huimos de un enemigo extremadamente fuerte que nos ataca por la retaguardia. Cadenas de eventos que casi siempre terminan con todo el grupo muerto mandando todo lo que hemos conseguido desde la última vez que guardamos a la nada. Es un diseño que hace mucho más realista la exploración pero puede llegar a resultar frustrante.
La única manera de sobrevivir con cierta seguridad es siendo metódico tanto con las provisiones para llevarnos antes de lanzarnos a la aventura, como tomando todos los apuntes que podamos de los niveles —no será raro invertir más tiempo en dibujar nuestro mapa que en peleas— y repetir las visitas a los mismos mapas una y otra vez. En algunas ocasiones muy concretas la repetición vendrá impuesta por las misiones que nos darán desde el pueblo de inicio, pero la mayoría serán para subir el nivel de los personajes.
Desgranadas las características que se repiten a lo largo de los juegos, por fin podemos adentrarnos en las características que hacen a Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan interesante. El primer título de esta saga para Nintendo 3DS. Nada más empezar con esta entrega nos hablan sobre los mitos y leyendas de esta tierra, y de como Yggdrasil, el árbol de la vida, se ha escondido tras tierras inhóspitas e inaccesibles para la humanidad por cerca de un milenio. Casualmente, el pueblo más cercano a estas tierras es nuestro punto de inicio de partida.
Si bien en la mayoría de los Etrian Oddyssey puede resultar opresiva la sensación que produce estar siempre en el mismo laberinto, cada vez más profundo, ese malestar desaparece en su cuarta entrega gracias a que debamos navegar con un globo aerostático entre las distintas tierras que, en este caso, actuarán como los estratos comentados anteriormente. Así pues, tendremos que explorar los laberintos que estarán esparcidos por los distintos terrenos mientras desbloqueamos nuevos escenarios con más laberintos. Este cambio dota al juego de una flexibilidad bastante mayor, y podremos escoger el orden que se nos antoje o nos parezca apropiado para realizar nuestra rutina de misiones. Sin embargo, en estos terrenos también habrá F.O.E. esperando que cometamos una imprudencia para acabar con nosotros.
Por otro lado, mientras que en los anteriores títulos se usaban estructuras en árbol para distribuir y adquirir las habilidades de nuestros personajes, en esta nueva entrega se han reorganizado de forma que sólo podremos acceder a una parte de las habilidades al principio e iremos desbloqueando el resto según subamos de nivel. Esto nos ayuda a visualizar y a decidir mejor que habilidades subir dentro de las disponibles. Además, junto con estos cambios, existen otros como un modo “casual” en el cual, si morimos en un encuentro fortuito, volveremos al pueblo de inicio sin perder nuestro progreso. Cosa que, sin embargo, no afecta a la dificultad ni sensación de reto a la hora de luchar contra monstruos y F.O.E. Un pequeño respiro que los jugadores temerosos de la exploración o los entornos opresivos sabrán apreciar.
Es de agradecer que un género tan clásico se actualice con nuevas características, añadiendo algo de frescura, y que logren que aunque a priori nos parezcan títulos similares siempre haya algo nuevo que descubrir. El verdadero punto fuerte del género es el poder vivir tu propia aventura, con sus eventos, misiones y luchas épicas, el desvelar los misterios que hay tras cada historia. Y sin duda Etrian Oddyssey IV es un buen exponente del género, muy completo tanto en enemigos, como en misiones o escenarios, con más de sesenta horas de juego. Si con mis palabras os he dejado dudosos sobre si probarlo o no, dadle una oportunidad, quién sabe, tal vez os quedéis para ver lo que hay al final del laberinto.
