Siguiendo con nuestra semana fantástica del Spectrum, vamos a analizar uno de los juegos más exitosos y profundos que vio el “gomas”. Hablamos de Batman, un videojuego desarrollado por Bernie Drummond y Jon Ritman (autor del magnífico Match Day) en un encargo de Ocean Software para sacar partido a la licencia que tenía de las aventuras del hombre murciélago.
Si por algo se caracterizó Ocean Software fue por poner un especial interés en la inversión en licencias, principalmente cinematográficas (The Addams Family, Rambo, Hook, RoboCop, Lethal Weapon, The Untouchables…), aunque hay que tener en cuenta que el lanzamiento de Batman fue en 1986, un par de años antes del estreno de la famosa adaptación de Tim Burton, por lo que las posibles influencias vendrían directamente del cómic o de la añeja seria protagonizada por Adam West. Batman aparecería también para otros ordenadores personales clásicos de la época, Amstrad CPC, Amstrad PCW y MSX, aunque la especialidad de Ritman era el desarrollo en Amstrad CPC y, sobre todo, Spectrum, por lo que podemos suponer que la versión maestra estaría desarrollada en una de esas dos plataformas.
El juego nos presenta a Robin, que mientras se encontraba reparando el Batmóvil, ha sido secuestrado. Como no puede ser de otra manera, la primera reacción de Batman es ir a su rescate, pero se encuentra totalmente en jaque con el Batmóvil desarmado, por lo que tendrá que ir buscando las piezas del Batcraft para poder continuar la aventura.
Las piezas del mismo se encuentran por diversos lugares de la Batcueva y no solo tendremos que hacernos con esas piezas ya que, inicialmente, Batman se encuentra sin ningún poder, por lo que también tendremos que ir localizando elementos como la Batbolsa, que nos permitirá almacenar objetos, las Batbotas que nos darán la capacidad de salto o el Batcinturón que nos permitirá caer desde ciertas alturas.
Batman se desarrolla a través de 150 habitaciones, no siendo esencial pasar por todas para terminar el juego. En dichas habitaciones podremos encontrar todo tipo de enemigos, que podremos esquivar por nuestra habilidad o bloqueando su paso con objetos móviles. Si un enemigo nos toca, perderemos una de las 8 vidas iniciales con las que contamos, si bien podremos conseguir vidas extras e incluso bonus de invencibilidad para facilitar nuestra tarea. Además, Batman cuenta con un sistema de puntos de control accediendo a las Batpiedras, que nos permitirá no tener que volver al punto inicial si perdemos todas las vidas.
Técnicamente, el juego se desarrolla en una perspectiva isométrica, con un motor extraordinariamente similar al Filmation que desarrollaría Ultimate para juegos como Knight Lore o Alien 8. De hecho, Batman fue un estupendo campo de pruebas para Jon Ritman y Bernie Drummond para su futuro éxito Head Over Heels, que desarrollarían un año más tarde. Aunque esto no les exime de culpa, no serían los primeros en copiar a los chicos de Ultimate, de hecho, la propia Ocean Software ya lo había hecho ese mismo año con The Great Scape.
Con los gráficos, obra de Drummond, hay que destacar la buena labor realizada teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones de la máquina de Sinclair. A pesar de ser habitaciones monocromas, nos encontramos con los distintos elementos bien definidos y diferenciables, moviéndose con una gran fluidez gracias a haber evitado el “scroll” con el uso del sistema de habitaciones. El apartado sonoro se limita a unos efectos muy en la línea de los lanzamientos de Spectrum y a unos segundos de la banda sonora de la serie según vamos consiguiendo las distintas piezas del Batcraft.
Como sistema de juego nos encontramos con una videoaventura muy bien realizada, entretenida y con una vida bastante larga. No sorprendería por sus sistema de juego debido a los lanzamientos de Ultimate que ya hemos comentado, sin embargo contaría con uno de los mejores acabados de los juegos de este tipo, lo cual no pasó desapercibido ni para crítica ni para público. Diversas publicaciones de la época le darían varios galardones y los análisis solían dejarlo con una media de sobresaliente, lo que terminaría por darle el empujón definitivo en las ventas.
Tal sería la influencia de Batman, que como todo juego de culto que se precie, ha sido objeto de diversos remakes. En 2000 el desarrollador británico Kakarot sacaba Watman, una versión bastante fiel tanto para PC como para Game Boy Advance. Más recientemente, Tomaz Kac ha desarrollado un remake homónimo, con unos gráficos adaptados a los tiempos actuales.
Un juegazo como la copa de un pino. Curiosamente, cuando yo empecé en esto de los videojuegos, el Batman conocido por mis allegados era el otro, el derivado de la peli en estos ordenadores. Y este lo vi por primera vez… en un PCW! 😀
Pues si, un juegazo que tengo el gusto de admitir que me terminé al igual que su hermano “Head over Hells” que fue hasta bien entrada la etapa de los 16bits el mejor juego en mis lista personal.
