Ya comenté recientemente que Ys: Memories of Celceta era una buena forma de introducirse en la serie de Adol Christin, y lo cierto es que completar este título consiguió que tuviera aún más ganas de ampliar mi experiencia con esta colección de juegos de Nihon Falcom. Es entonces cuando compruebo que en mi biblioteca de Steam, debido a mi Síndrome de Diógenes digital, tengo, por casualidad, el remake de la tercera entrega de esta serie y me dispongo a instalarlo. Mientras tanto, me informo un poco acerca del juego original.
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys ha aparecido en infinidad de plataformas, desde los equipos NEC PC-8801 hasta las videoconsolas SNES o Megadrive, y contaba como característica principal el abandono de la vista cenital y el auto ataque de los dos primeros títulos de la saga —el primero de ellos fue analizado por mi compañero Jaime— para pasar a una perspectiva lateral adoptando un estilo de juego similar a Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Posteriormente, para su remake para PC y PSP, desde Nihon Falcom decidieron adaptar el juego a la vista cenital que acompaña a toda la saga, añadir más personajes y reforzar la forma de narrar el argumento. Así es como nació este Ys: The Oath in Felghana, que aunque parecía que no iba a ocurrir, al final, sí que lo recibimos en occidente —con 7 años de retraso—.
Retorno al hogar
Los hechos narrados en este juego se inician cuando Adol y su amigo Dogi, inseparables desde la primera entrega y desaparecido en el título de PS Vita debido a su carácter introductivo, llegan a la ciudad natal de este último, en la región de Felghana. En cuanto llegamos, Dogi empieza a saludar a sus viejos conocidos y comprobamos que algo extraño está ocurriendo en la zona. El mejor amigo de Dogi, y compañero de entrenamiento, ha desaparecido y unos monstruos han comenzado a atacar según qué zonas.
Evidentemente, Adol, ese aventurero con el don de la oportunidad, no se quedará de brazos cruzados e iniciará su cruzada para averiguar qué demonios está ocurriendo en Felghana y, ya de paso, ayudarles a salir del apuro. Comienza de esta forma este ARPG que nos llevará a recorrer de cabo a rabo toda la pequeña región costera y a perdernos en sus pocas pero extensísimas mazmorras.
Al igual que cuando jugué al Memories of Celceta —otro juego de la serie ya analizado—, el guion no es el punto fuerte del título. Si bien no presenta errores garrafales y todo tiene una justificación, también peca de tópico y previsible, simplemente una excusa para avanzar. Este es un caso claro de ejemplo de historia al servicio de un juego, pues en todo momento veremos venir los giros de la trama y preveremos los futuros acontencimientos.
Con alma de plataformas
Uno de los puntos en los que se hizo hincapié cuando se decidió el cambio de perspectiva de Ys III: Wanderers from Ys a este fue dejar (un poco) de lado el componente explorativo de la región para centrarse en un reto más plataformero dentro de las mazmorras. En la revisión y cambio de perspectiva que se hizo para Ys: The Oath in Felghana se añadió la posibilidad de moverse por la isla para llegar de un punto a otro —sin ningún desvío ni secreto en el mapa— pero se trató de mantener ese toque plataformero. Así pues, Adol contará desde el inicio con una habilidad de salto que deberá poner a prueba con mucha frecuencia tanto en el combate como en el recorrido de las mazmorras, donde llegará a haber zonas de perspectiva casi lateral al más puro estilo Link’s Awakening.
Por lo demás ofrece una experiencia acorde con el resto de juegos de la colección, con libertad de movimiento, zonas bloqueadas hasta la obtención de ciertos elementos que nos proporcionarán ciertas habilidades, con combates, y con ciertos momentos de exploración profunda para localizar esa antorcha que debemos encender o palanca que debemos activar para abrir la puerta hacia ese jefe de mitad o final de nivel.
Ys: The Oath in Felghana es todo un reto ya en su nivel normal: los puntos de guardado están bastante dispersos y no dispondremos de ningún ítem curativo en nuestro inventario. Esta situación se atenúa un poco durante la exploración debido a algunos objetos de curación y potenciación que nuestros enemigos pueden ir dejando tras ser derrotados, por desgracia casi siempre menor a lo que necesitamos. Pero entonces llegamos a los jefes. Parémonos en este punto, el punto fuerte del juego: los combates contra los jefes. En ese preciso momento la intensidad de la partida se multiplica por infinito al no poder contar ni con los potenciadores, ni con los objetos curativos que dejan caer los enemigos comunes puesto que es un uno contra uno —en clara desventaja—, donde el conocer los patrones no querrá decir que la victoria sea nuestra, y donde se pondrá a prueba nuestra pericia con el teclado o mando para manejar nuestros ataques, las habilidades extra que vayamos adquiriendo y nuestra destreza para el esquive sin ayuda alguna.
Bien conservado, bien divertido
El lanzamiento de este título en tierras europeas llegó en 2012, pero el desarrollo de esta obra de Nihon Falcom data de 2005 en tierras japonesas. Dicho esto puede parecer que gráficamente esté desfasado, pero eso no es en absoluto cierto. Siempre he considerado que en un juego prima más el gusto artístico que la tecnología utilizada en él, y este caso, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, es un claro ejemplo. 
Los personajes son de un diseño simple en 2D renderizado, y los escenarios son en un 3D sin mucho detalle en las texturas, pero en resoluciones HD lucen muy bien y llegan a dejar estampas muy bellas como una puesta de sol mientras corremos por las almenas de un castillo. Además, al no ser un juego muy exigente con el hardware, nos regala una velocidad de acción endiablada que no da un respiro al jugador, seña de identidad de la serie. A esto se le añade el apartado sonoro que, y esto también es habitual en todos los títulos protagonizados por Adol Christin, está compuesto por unas melodías pegadizas, que realzan el carácter aventurero e intenso del devenir de la trama y que resonarán en nuestra cabeza aun después de haber terminado nuestra sesión de juego.
Ya lo dije con Ys: Memories of Celceta y lo vuelvo a repetir con Ys: The Oath in Felghana: esta serie está muy injustamente ninguneada en occidente y por ello el gran público se está perdiendo grandes exponentes de un género tan divertido como es el ARPG; juegos, sobre todo este caso, que tienen una orientación tan clara hacia la acción y que los hace más dinámicos que otros títulos que optan por desarrollar una trama más densa y pausada. No tiene la fama de Sonic, Mario, Link, Sheppard o Nathan Drake, pero Adol Christin es mucho más viejo que algunos de ellos y nos ofrece unas cotas de diversión que no tienen nada que envidiar a los juegos de estos personajes mucho más conocidos por estos lares.

Yo empezaría por Origins de PC 😛
Da igual con cuál empieces, son historias independientes con guiños. El problema de intentar empezar con el Origins y seguir con el Chronicles es la involución jugable, de un juego que toma el sistema del Oath in Felghana y lo refina, para pasar a dos juegos que mantienen el sistema que les vio nacer, con el autoataque y menos alicientes jugables. En realidad Chronicles simplemente nos da un retoque gráfico para que se haga más agradable conocer los orígenes de la saga Ys.
Aún así, todo lo que sea jugar a esta saga y darla a conocer un poco más es bueno.
