No hace mucho publiqué un recorrido a la carrera de Mike Oldfield y su relación con los videojuegos en el que retrataba la parte interactiva del álbum The Songs of Distant Earth, inspirado por la novela homónima de Arthur C. Clarke. La casualidad ha querido que pocas semanas después mi compañero Raúl me pidiera realizar un repaso a un juego también inspirado en otra obra de este maestro de la ciencia ficción: Rendez-vous with Rama.
Supongo que a estas alturas no vamos a descubriros quién es Arthur C. Clarke, pero se trata de un verdadero referente de la literatura de ciencia ficción cuya obra cumbre data de 1968 y que paralelamente se publicaría también en forma de película. Estamos hablando del clásico 2001: Odisea en el Espacio, donde la colaboración entre Clarke y Stanley Kubrick dio uno de los grandes clásicos cinematográficos de este género. La obra en la que se basa el videojuego del que hoy hablamos, se publicó tan solo cuatro años más tarde, en pleno estado de gracia del autor británico. Rendezvouz with Rama, sin llegar a los niveles de éxito de la novela predecesora, tuvo una buena acogida e incluso consiguió diversos galardones literarios de importancia de la época.
Veinticuatro años después, en 1996, Sierra iba a rescatar prácticamente del olvido esta novela y lanzar un videojuego basado en ella. ¿Por qué en ese momento precisamente? Es difícil saberlo a ciencia cierta, pero está claro que para desarrollar una historia de ciencia ficción nada mejor que una novela de Clarke. Además, la popularidad del autor había tenido un repunte, por un lado, por el disco de Oldfield que indicamos al principio y, por otro, porque estaba preparando la cuarta entrega de su serie de novelas más conocida bajo el título de 3001: Odisea Final.
Sea como fuere, Sierra Online, encargó el desarrollo del videojuego a Dynamix, compañía con la que ya había trabajado en algunas aventuras como Heart of China, Rise of the Dragon o Space Quest V: Next Mutation. Curiosamente, no es el primer videojuego basado en esta novela, ya que en 1984 fue lanzada una aventura conversacional de manos de Tellerium. Sierra no tenía duda del tirón del autor inglés y no dudó en darle un título final kilométrico a su producto: Arthur C. Clarke & Gentry Lee Present Rama, donde Gentry Lee es un autor que colaboró con Clarke en la secuela de la novela.
La aventura sigue la trama de las dos novelas con ciertas libertades en favor de la jugabilidad, donde se nos cuenta como un misterioso objeto volador de forma cilíndrica ha entrado en el Sistema Solar. La Agencia Espacial Internacional (ISA) lo llamó Rama y envió al equipo Newton para investigar el extraño artefacto y descubrir sus propósitos. Una vez allí, descubren que en su interior se encuentran ciudades enteras y todo un ecosistema con extrañas criaturas. En un principio, nuestra aventura tratará sobre la exploración de tan curioso lugar, pero no será más que una disculpa para completar nuestro inventario ya que, según avanza la trama, Rama cambia su trayectoria lanzándose hacia la Tierra.
Rama es una aventura gráfica muy particular y muy representativa de la época en que fue lanzado —mediados de los noventa—. En pleno éxtasis por las nuevas tecnologías y con el CD-Rom entrando a todo trapo en los hogares, Rama tiene puesto un mayor énfasis en aspectos técnicos que en argumentales y jugables. El juego se desarrolla en primera persona, de una forma similar a títulos como Lost in Time o Inca, y nos vamos a encontrar con una gran cantidad de escenas de actores reales sobre escenarios renderizados en 3D, en lo que es toda una oda al croma. Sin duda, este aspecto tecnológico es lo más destacado y su acabado es muy destacable si nos situamos en la época en la que fue lanzado. Por otro lado, a la hora del diseño, hay que destacar que, sin duda, fue obra de artistas que realmente eran aficionados al libro, por la fidelidad al mismo en dichos diseños.
Desde el punto de vista jugable, pinchamos algo en hueso. La novela podría haber dado un buen desarrollo de la aventura gráfica, pero se basa únicamente en la resolución de puzles, minijuegos y retos matemáticos. No obstante, hay que decir que dichos acertijos son más complicados que la media y, en ocasiones, requieren de ciertos conocimientos, en lo que podría ser un homenaje a la obra de Clarke, que siempre puso especial énfasis en lo realista de los hechos científicos que narraba.
De esta manera, la sensación con Rama es un tanto agridulce. Le pasa como a muchos videojuegos de la época —o incluso a una consola en sí como la Mega-CD—, los elementos tecnológicos que poseía lo hicieron muy destacable en su momento y alucinó a los recientes compradores de un flamante ordenador multimedia, pero al pasar los años y dejar de ser sorpresivos los elementos multimedia se han ido viendo sus carencias. La jugabilidad y la integración de la aventura es bastante mejorable y la tecnología audiovisual que usa se desfasó en pocos años.
Probablemente, estos puntos fueron los que provocaron la cancelación de su secuela, que fue programada por Sierra pero que nunca vio la luz. Aun así, no está mal recordar estos juegos de la época de la popularización de los ordenadores multimedias, donde un montón de títulos cargados de AVIs sin compresión han ido cayendo en el olvido de una forma más profunda de lo deseable. Es realmente curioso como videojuegos de mediados de los noventa han envejecido peor que algunos de los ochenta.
