El argumento se basa en la voraz hambruna que tiene permanentemente nuestro protagonista, un neanderthal que nos recuerda poderosamente a los personajes de la película Cavernícola de 1981 protagonizada por Ringo Starr. La misión de este curioso personaje será la de ir recorriendo diferentes entornos del mundo prehistórico en busca de comida, peleando con todo tipo de dinosaurios para conseguirlo.
Prehistorik es un clásico plataformas bidimensional de vista lateral, que sigue unos estándares más propios de una videoconsola que de un videojuego para ordenadores personales. Nuestro personaje tiene como movimientos básicos el salto y el ataque con su cachiporra, que permitirá aturdir a los distintos enemigos que intenten acabar con nosotros. Tenemos dos barras distintas a controlar, por un lado la típica de vida y por otro la de hambre, que tendremos que mantener alta a base de comernos todo alimento que nos encontremos a lo largo de la aventura.
El juego toma como inspiración infinidad de elementos presentes en otros plataformas de la época y los aúna con buen tino en un único juego, lo que da un resultado muy divertido. De esta manera, podremos ir cambiando nuestro arma por otras más poderosas, las cuales conseguiremos a través de hechiceros indios. También existe un sistema de puertas que nos permite acceder a nuevos emplazamientos para conseguir nuevos objetos mas allá del escenario en scroll principal. Por último, queda destacar algunos métodos de transporte muy originales como es el uso de globos de helio o ala deltas, que nos permitirán evitar barrancos y llegar a lugares de difícil acceso.
Al final de cada nivel, nos enfrentaremos con el típico jefe final de fase, el cual nos esperará en un cuadrilátero prehistórico y con una banda sonora que nos recuerda a la película Rocky. Estos jefes serán dinosaurios de enormes proporciones que tendrán un punto débil donde atacarle y contarán con una pequeña legión de enemigos que nos pondrán las cosas muy difíciles.
Prehistorik no supone ninguna revolución en su género pero, como hemos indicado, trae una amalgama de elementos clásicos de diversos títulos lo convierten en uno de los plataformas más divertidos de los ordenadores de 16 bits. Aparte de la buena jugabilidad, Prehistorik destaca por su trabajo artístico, explotando totalmente las extensas paletas que permitían los nuevos modelos de 16 bits y, en especial, la tarjeta VGA de los PC. De esta manera, tenemos unos escenarios llenos de color que pueden evocarnos cualquier capítulo de Los Picapiedra.
A esto hay que añadir el gran sentido del humor con el que fue diseñado el juego, marca de la casa de Titus, y que hace de la partida una experiencia muy agradable, a pesar de que la dificultad está muy por encima de otros plataformas de la época. Otro de los puntos que siempre suelen destacar en los juegos de la desarrolladora francesa es la banda sonora y Prehistorik no es una excepción. Las melodías son tremendamente pegadizas y hacen buen uso de los elementos multimedia de la época, a pesar de que sus desarrollos aún se encontraban en pañales tecnológicamente hablando.
Como es de esperar, el mundo del videojuego no se quedó indiferente ante un título como Prehistorik. El universo de los ordernadores personales no estaba habituado a un plataformas de este estilo y, debido a ello, las reseñas de la crítica fueron muy dispares. La mayor parte de la prensa destacó el apartado técnico y la variedad de criaturas, pero puso pegas a la mecánica tachándola de repetitiva, algo que choca en un género que no destaca por su variedad en el sistema de juego.
A pesar de este relativo desencuentro con la crítica, lo cierto es que Prehistorik quedó en la memoria de los jugadores, que recibieron al título con los brazos abiertos. Tanto es así, que Titus lanzó en 1993 Prehistorik 2. Este segundo título aún mejoró más el original y se convirtió en uno de los mejores juegos del género de ese año para cualquier plataforma. Hasta tal punto llegó la calidad y la repercusión de esta segunda entrega, que en 1995 pegaría el salto al mundo de las videoconsolas en Super Nintendo bajo el título de Prehistorik Man.
Un juego al que no pude echarle el guante en condiciones / en tiempos destacables, pero que siempre la gente me hablaba muy bien de él. De hecho, en esa ansia acabé jugando a Prehistorik Isle xD
El juego es una maravilla, pero es que la segunda parte es un imprescindible.
