Siguiendo con la tendencia de la semana pasada, seguimos con los superhéroes de cómics, dando el salto en esta ocasión desde Marvel a DC, para revisar uno de los títulos sobre el conocido hombre-murciélago. Tras el tremendo éxito internacional en 1989 de Batman, película dirigida por Tim Burton y protagonizada por Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger y Jack Nicholson, Warner Bros volvió a encargarle al excéntrico director una continuación de la serie. De esta manera, empezaría la producción de Batman Returns, donde repetiría Michael Keaton y que contaría con Danny de Vito en el papel de El Pingüino y Michelle Pfeiffer como Catwoman. Como es natural tras el éxito de la primera entrega, a Batman Returns le acompañó toda una campaña mediática, con ingentes cantidades de merchandising asociado donde, por supuesto, no podían faltar los videojuegos. El jugoso pastel de la licencia fue repartido entre SEGA, Konami y Atari, cada uno de los cuales se encargaría de versiones para diferentes plataformas, por lo que nos encontramos con uno de los lanzamientos de videojuegos con mayor diversificación, sobre todo para lo que era habitual en aquellos días.
SEGA lanzaría una versión para Mega Drive y Mega CD, con un estilo muy similar al videojuego de la primera película de la saga, un plataformas laberíntico con alguna fase de conducción pero que fue altamente criticado. Para Master System y Game Gear, tendríamos un juego algo más encaminado a la acción, con mejor acogida y del que se rumorea que originalmente iba a ser parte de la saga Shinobi, pero que se prefirió aprovechar la franquicia. En esa misma línea, Atari publicaría una versión para su portátil, Atari Lynx.
Konami se encargaría de las versiones de NES y Super Nintendo, las más conocidas y más exitosas de estas adaptaciones, siendo unos beat’em up con muy buena acogida y, en el caso de la versión de Super Nintendo, con un acabado técnico excelente, sacando todo el jugo a la licencia. Pero la participación de Konami no se acaba aquí ya que la grandilocuencia de los lanzamientos que realizó para Nintendo dejó en segundo plano el juego que realizo para PC, el cual resulta ser un hito no solo en esta adaptación, sino en los juegos de toda la saga. La peculiaridad de esta versión de Batman Returns se encuentra en su género, ya que alejándose de los plataformas y la acción, típica de los videojuegos de superhéroes, Konami nos presenta una aventura gráfica en busca de satisfacer las necesidades de un público tan especial como era el usuario de ordenadores personales de la época.
Para ser justos hay que indicar que dentro de los videojuegos de superhéroes, los inspirados en la franquicia de Batman siempre han sido más especiales y más tendentes a alejarse de la acción más pura. Tiempo atrás, celebrando el aniversario del Spectrum recordamos un videojuego publicado por Ocean Software con perspectiva isométrica, donde nos encontrábamos más cerca de la aventura o el plataformas que de la acción. Por otro lado, el título que sacó la propia Ocean Software con motivo de la primera película, Batman: The Movie, aunque principalmente era una mezcla de plataformas y acción contaba con zonas de conducción y puzle que lo convertían en una verdadera amalgama de géneros.
Así, el juego que hoy nos ocupa le volvió a dar otra vuelta de tuerca a esto. En vez de ser un juego de acción con elementos de aventura nos encontramos con un juego de aventuras con elementos de acción. Batman Returns contaría con el desarrollo de Spirit of Discovery, una desconocida compañía que solo contaba en su haber con un juego de casinos llamado Beat the House y de la que después nunca más se supo.
El juego desarrolla de forma extensa el argumento de la película, realizando cambios lógicos para darle dificultad y extensión a la experiencia. Nada más comenzar a jugar nos encontramos con nuestro protagonista en la batcueva y podemos observar que vamos a disponer de la interfaz típica de las aventuras gráficas de la época, muy similar al SCUMM de Lucas Arts. Eso sí, bastante simplificado, como cursor tendremos el logo de Batman que cambiará de color cuando pasemos sobre un objeto con el que interactuar y realizará la acción asociada, sin necesidad de escoger entre diversas opciones.
Nuestro batmóvil hará las veces de mapa para desplazarnos por distintos puntos de Gotham City para ir haciendo las pesquisas necesarias. En diversas ocasiones tendremos que pelear con alguno de los esbirros de El Pingüino y la interfaz cambiará un poco para estas escenas de pseudoacción. En la parte inferior de la pantalla se representará el cinturón de nuestro héroe donde podremos elegir entre diversas opciones de forma de lucha y el uso de diversos objetos de ataque, en un sistema de pelea algo tosco pero que recuerda poderosamente al género de los RPG. Los primeros enemigos son fácilmente vencibles, pero según vamos avanzando en el juego se nos irán presentando rivales de mayor entidad que requieren de un uso inteligente de las capacidades de Batman. Tras abatir a un enemigo tendremos la opción de interrogarlo y conseguir nuevas pistas escogiendo entre diversas opciones de diálogo.
A partir de ahí el videojuego se va desarrollando con la recolección de diversas pistas en distintos puntos de la ciudad y su posterior análisis en la batcueva (visualizando vídeos, analizando objetos, leyendo teletipos, etc…) que nos vayan llevando hasta la pista siguiente, hasta que finalmente podamos llegar al enfrentamiento final con El Pingüino.
A nivel técnico nos encontramos con una aventura gráfica bastante estándar, con un trabajo bastante interesante de pixel art, donde disfrutamos de una buena realización de localizaciones. Curiosamente, la animación de los personajes es bastante correcta en las áreas enfocadas hacia la aventura y algo más deficientes en los momentos de batalla. El apartado gráfico se completa con digitalizaciones de algún que otro fotograma de la película para las partes de dialogo, sin llegar a ser nada del otro mundo. La BSO contiene versiones MIDI de la partitura original de Danny Elfman, más algunas melodías propias que sin ser gran cosa encajan en el conjunto del videojuego.
Para ser una aventura gráfica su nivel de dificultad es más bajo que en los demás títulos de la época de Lucas Arts o Sierra (de hecho su dificultad está más cercana a las aventuras gráficas actuales), lo cual no ayudó para que encandilara a los entusiastas del género. Quizá en busca de un espectro de mercado más amplio diseñaron Batman Returns con esta amplia mezcla de géneros y al final se quedó sin contentar a nadie, ya que los aficionados a la acción con superhéroes no iban a encontrar ningún interés en el sistema de combate. A esto hay que añadir que de la espectacular campaña de lanzamiento de las distintas versiones, ésta fue la que pasó más desapercibida (incluso más que una versión de Amiga vapuleada por la crítica) llegando incluso a ser ignorada por muchas revistas del sector y contando con notas mediocres en los pocos análisis de los que fue objeto.
Sin embargo, las bajas ventas que produjo Batman Returns no lo hacen un juego a despreciar. Su mecánica, aunque mejorable, resulta curiosa y puede servirnos para comprender como evolucionan los géneros en los videojuegos. Está claro que esta versión de Batman Returns no ha terminado siendo referente para otros juegos, pero si es cierto que, por regla general, los juegos basados en el hombre-murciélago cuentan con ese “algo más” que no tienen otros superhéroes de acción, con sus excepciones, por supuesto (durante el resto de la década de los 90 nos encontramos con infinidad de beat’em up cuya calidad iba siendo pareja a las películas que adaptaban). Quizá el hecho de que Batman sea un superhéroe que no cuenta con superpoderes ha provocado que las historias de sus mejores cómics y películas sean más profundos que la media, siendo algo que se transmite al mundo del videojuego con experiencias más reflexivas que simplemente ir golpeando enemigos.
