Si nos habéis seguido, sabréis que abrimos la semana con una crítica del interesante Vessel y ahora tenemos el placer de publicar una amena charla con John Krajewski, cocreador y fundador de Strange Loop Games junto a Martin Farren, a través de la cual podremos obtener respuestas sobre el desarrollo del título y lo que significa ser un independiente.

Videshock: He estado jugando con Vessel y parece que el comienzo de la acción es muy lento. ¿Por qué se ha hecho de este modo en lugar de ofrecer rápidamente el manejador de fluidos?
John Krajewski: El prototipo original para el IGF comenzaba el juego con el manejador pero lo eliminamos cuando lo rediseñamos para la versión final del juego. Queríamos centrar el juego en los Fluros y la creación de criaturas líquidas así que decidimos presentar la mecánica primero. Incluso entonces, nos tomamos nuestro tiempo para introducir a los jugadores en estas mecánicas usando todo el primer mundo al completo antes de que puedas obtener todo el equipo. Sentimos que era más importante dejar que el usuario se metiera en el mundo de manera natural, sin ningún texto de tutorial, dejándole explorar e inventar mientras simultáneamente se ve inmerso en la ambientación. El mejor medio para lograr esto era introducir los conceptos uno a uno cada vez y dejar que el usuario los explorara completamente.
¿No es como tener dos juegos en uno, uno más basado en los puzles y otro basado en la destreza del jugador y las habilidades?
Sí hay un poco de eso; intentamos mantener la habilidad necesaria para las plataformas al mínimo, aunque no queríamos quitar toda la acción y centrarlo sólo en los puzles, porque la interacción con el líquido es tan divertida que si no tuviésemos secuencias de acción nos estaríamos dejando montones de interacciones en la mesa.
El juego tiene una gran cantidad de texto para leer. En estos tiempos donde todo está basado en imágenes y animaciones, ¿es vuestro modo de decirle al jugador “bien, tómate esto en serio”?
El texto es completamente opcional, está en forma de diarios, y su propósito principal es ayudar a reforzar la sensación de quién eres, qué estás haciendo, y por qué lo estás haciendo, etc. Hay mucho pasando bajo la superficie del juego, como lo que representan los Fluros y su significado, qué le está ocurriendo a este mundo y cómo se relaciona con el nuestro, y es algo que si el jugador quiere experimentar se encuentra en los diarios. Si lo único que quiere es jugar, también puede hacerlo.
El final es un poco extraño. Sin destripar demasiado de la trama a la gente que aún no lo ha jugado, ¿tenéis intención de continuar la historia desde este punto o realmente acaba aquí?
A nosotros nos encantaría continuar el juego, y esperamos que ocurra. Una secuela y una precuela, ambas, son proyectos que quiero hacer. Sin embargo, antes de que ocurra tenemos que pensar primero en la parte de los negocios y sobre qué plataformas correrá.
Parece que el juego será lanzado en otras plataformas como XBLA, PSN, y dispositivos móviles. Para las dos primeras mencionadas, ¿tenéis intención de negociar con publishers o vais a probar por vuestra cuenta?

¿Quién debería ser el responsable de decir que es responsable de decir que es independiente o no? ¿Una organización, una persona, o una compañía?
Es más bien una actitud, creo. Independencia significa que estás expandiendo los límites de algún modo fuera de lo que se entiende por un juego tradicional. Pueden existir compañías grandes y pequeñas que se ajusten a la definición.
¿Y realmente importa?
Es definitivamente una zona gris para muchas compañías si son indies, pero yo creo que demuestran más con el tipo de juegos que crean que con su tamaño.
¿Qué significa en este momento “desarrollador de videojuegos indie” y qué debería significar?
Creo que debería significar “alguien que impulsa lo que los juegos son y pueden ser”. Y sobre que significa actualmente, posiblemente hayas escuchado algo diferente de cada persona a la que le hayas preguntado.
¿No es mejor centrarse en la innovación, el riesgo, la imaginación, en lugar de los fondos de un publisher durante el desarrollo?
Debes balancearlo si quieres llevar un estudio que realmente haga dinero. Creo que la innovación puede llevarte a unas grandes ventas, aunque realmente es muy arriesgado probar alguna fórmula concreta para un juego porque el mercado está muy saturado ahí fuera. Seguramente tengas más suerte rompiendo el molde.
