Los juegos del año 2013 en Videoshock, JoDAS para todos

Es indudable que todo el mundo guarda en su mente y en su corazón un pequeño listado de sus títulos favoritos. Un grupo de tamaño variable con aquellos títulos que les ha hecho disfrutar o que les ha sorprendido gratamente. Por tanto, al margen de cualquier elección de un representante triunfal absoluto para este año —algo habitual en estas fechas—, hemos recopilado las justificaciones de nuestros autores sobre cuáles son sus JuegOs Del Año, sus JoDA, o sus GoTY si ustedes lo prefieren.

Como comentaba, no encontrarán un listado absoluto de lo mejor, ni un ganador al inicio o al final, esperamos, además, que no entiendan que para nuestros colaboradores sean los únicos que deben ser mencionados. Estos son tan solo los juegos que cada uno recordará de un modo más intenso. Se trata, por tanto, de una defensa personal y lo que representan para ellos. Tal vez estén aquí por ser los mejores en un género concreto o tan solo por suponer algún avance para el mismo.

Cada redactor ha escogido libremente según sus propios criterios entre lo que ha podido disfrutar y no de entre un listado sin sentido con todo lo que ha aparecido durante el año. Porque también somos conscientes de que, hoy en día, es complicado disfrutar del tiempo suficiente para dar cuenta de todos los videojuegos del circuito comercial, e imposible por completo acaparar toda la extensa escena independiente.

Sin más preámbulo, les dejamos a solas con las defensas y argumentos de nuestros redactores. Esperamos que si encuentran un título injustamente ignorado defiendan el motivo de por qué debería haber sido mencionado y lo compartan con nosotros; estaremos encantados de leerles.

Guacamelee! (PS3, PS Vita, PC)
En plena crisis creativa en el mundo de los videojuegos, no es de extrañar que, en los últimos años a la hora de revisar los mejores títulos del año, tengamos que echar mano de la escena indie. Este pasado 2013 no ha sido una excepción y frente a la avalancha de FPS y enésimas secuelas, de nuevo las brillantes mentes emergentes nos han dado muchas alegrías. Y puestos a destacar uno de estos títulos, hay que reverenciar a Guacamelee!, un juego que ya por concepto te enamora: lucha mejicana, mitología azteca y mucha acción.

Pasea como Pedro por su casa dentro del género de plataformas de acción, con un sistema de juego que te permite —en una misma experiencia— combinar velocidad, todo tipo de llaves de lucha libre y una serie de movimientos mágicos, sazonado todo ello con grandes dosis de humor y una cantidad de huevos de Pascua que no se veía desde hacía mucho tiempo. Como bien indicaba mi compañero Julián en su crítica, es una mezcla de lo mejor de Metroid y Symphony of the Night, metido todo ello dentro de un burrito y con una buena cantidad de salsa mejicana.

Guacamelee! durará poco en tus manos, no porque su duración sea corta (que lo es) sino porque una vez que se empieza no se puede parar. Uno de los pocos juegos en los que estás deseando realizar toda la exploración para poder saber qué más sorpresas esconde.

Ni No Kuni: La Maldición de la Bruja Blanca (PlayStation 3)
Los amantes de los JRPG teníamos muchas ganas de echarle el guante a lo nuevo de Level 5, y más ganas todavía al ver que tras el apartado artístico se encontraba el siempre entrañable y casi siempre sobresaliente Studio Ghibli. El resultado ha sido de los mejores y se ha convertido en uno de los representantes para el género, con un apartado técnico intachable y un desarrollo de menos a más que sacia la sed de aquellos que anhelábamos un buen JRPG en PS3. No es innovador, ni lo pretende, pero muestra un gran nivel en todo lo que nos propone. Una de las compras obligadas para todo amante de este género.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo 3DS)
Tal vez lo más terrorífico de Animal Crossing: New Leaf es que en absoluto parece un juego terrorífico. Su agresiva lógica capitalista, su invitación a establecer relaciones sociales basadas en el consumismo, o la visión del ejercicio de la administración pública como una actividad marcada por los caprichos de un dirigente vitalicio, son aspectos que parecen definir mejor una fábula distópica que un inofensivo simulador social protagonizado por animalitos antropomórficos.

No obstante, todos estos pensamientos quedan ahogados una vez que me pongo a jugar con la última entrada de esta ya veterana serie. De hecho, cuando mañana inventen por fin Matrix deseo que mi enchufe cerebral me conecte directamente con Viriviví, mi pueblo en New Leaf, un mundo en el que este año he sido feliz. Quiero ir a jugar al ping-pong a casa de Benito, ir a tomar té con Patidifú y jugar al escondite con Solomín. En definitiva, llevar hasta el límite un autoengaño que me hace ver en inteligencias artificiales excepcionalmente bien construidas personajes de carne y hueso con los que no quiero perder nunca el contacto.

Jamás había desarrollado un cariño tan profundo por unos polígonos asociados a unas líneas de diálogo (brillantemente escritas y traducidas, eso sí), y eso es algo que me produce mucho susto. Mi cerebro dice DEFCON 2, pero mi corazón dice XOXO. Sea como sea, Animal Crossing me parece un título imprescindible si lo que queremos es utilizar los videojuegos para tomarle el pulso a nuestro presente.

The Last of Us (PlayStation 3)
Se nos está llenando la industria de franquicias y no hay grande que no trabaje en un juego numerado… no obstante, ahí está Naughty Dog apostando por cerrar la generación con algo único, autocontenido. The Last of Us sirve como fiesta de fin de ciclo y también como comentario sobre el estado del videojuego: ahí tienen un repaso anotado a los zombis, al apocalipsis, al third-person shooter, al sigilo, al survival, a la conversión del medio en cinematografía, al sidekick, a las misiones de escolta, etc.

No solo es valiente y ambicioso el planteamiento, es que el resultado está a la altura. Solo deben preguntar a quienes lo hayan jugado por: el invierno o las jirafas… ya verán qué les contestan, quizá hasta les suelten una lagrimita. Yo sigo aplaudiendo que el desarrollador estrella de Sony abandonara las set pieces —que tan bien les ha funcionado— para centrarse en una experiencia más cruda y agónica, y que en un mapa dominado por las decisiones morales todo el clímax se construya sobre algo que su protagonista, Joel, decide sin consultar con el jugador.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo 3DS)
Históricamente, Nintendo ha sido experta en innovar y refinar sus fórmulas, por eso es imposible no arrugar un poco el morro viéndola jugar sobre seguro más de la cuenta. A link between worlds tenía pinta de alimentar la tendencia, con un remake/secuela que se adivinaba revisión descafeinada del mito. Qué equivocados andábamos, oigan.

La saga de Hyrule vuelve a su mejor juego para retomar las bases y construir una evolución alternativa. La liberación de los objetos, de la munición y del orden de la mazmorras se unen a una mecánica la mar de bien aprovechada (meterse en las paredes) para redefinir y revalidar los méritos de una serie que ha dado joyas incuestionables como A link to the past y Wind Waker. Zelda vuelve a sus bases para crecer y recordarnos su grandeza.

Steamworld Dig (PC, Mac, Nintendo 3DS)
Tener referentes no es malo (el otro día intenté meterle mano a Dream Trigger 3D y me pudo tanta abstracción), sobre todo si se usan para construir algo propio. Steamworld Dig toma la base de Metroid y le inyecta mucho de Dig Dug; esta suma de dos clásicos hace que la experiencia sea algo familiar y a la vez totalmente nuevo, que la exploración se redefina y cautive como si fuéramos novatos.

No imaginan qué gustazo ponerse a cavar y crear su propio camino, su propio mapa. Qué responsabilidad pensar que la navegación depende de la ruta que abre uno mismo, qué inmersión bajar metros y metros en una cueva misteriosa mientras se nos apaga la linterna.

Si luego, encima, el juego tiene estética de western steampunk con robots simpáticos, pues miel sobre hojuelas.

Save the Date (PC, Mac)
Hay que andar siempre con un ojo pegado a los juegos indie de verdad, esos que hace un chaval solo en ratos muertos y sin ganar un duro. Si no, corremos el riesgo de perdernos experimentos como Save the date, una novela visual de la que es mejor disfrutar sin saber demasiado. La cosa va de salvar a una chica que muere, de formas cada vez más absurdas, partida tras partida, y se enreda con el uso de datos persistentes; esto es, el juego recuerda todo lo que hemos decidido en intentos anteriores. Tal vez empiecen a sospechar por qué muchos lo han rebautizado como Groundhog Date.

Sirve de ejercicio metanarrativo que nos obliga a cuestionarnos la naturaleza de la narrativa y los videojuegos, y con eso ya valdría, pero por suerte no se queda en una cosa sesuda e impostada: más de uno anda todavía emocionado, frustrado y hechizado por su extraordinariamente inteligente tramo final. Intenten salvar a su cita y luego me cuentan.

Papers Please (PC, Mac)
Siempre he sido un gran defensor de los videojuegos como forma de comunicación de ideas. Más allá de ser un producto de entretenimiento y diversión, es un medio de expresión, con todas las letras. Papers, Please es uno de esos títulos que se esfuerza en ser un juego de algo. Y es curioso, porque en realidad no me atrevo a calificarlo como divertido. Es inflexible, es duro, es incómodo, es repetitivo, pero sin duda tiene algo, y no es solo de lo que te habla sino cómo de bien se entrelaza su temática con su mecánica.

Trabajamos como inspector de aduanas de Arstotzka, una ficticia nación al más puro estilo soviético. Tu trabajo es aparentemente sencillo: comprobar la documentación de todo aquel que intente pasar la frontera. Pero se complica más por culpa de decisiones políticas, atentados terroristas, etc., decisiones externas que hacen que cada vez tengamos una cantidad más grande de papeleo que atender.

Y no es por obviar sus problemas, que los tiene, pero varias de las críticas que he escuchado han terminado sonando como alabanzas para mí. Frases del tipo: «Yo me dediqué a sellar papeles, que es de lo que va el juego», o «no establecí ninguna conexión emocional con los emigrantes», parecen más una forma de afrontar los hechos del título, puesto que Papers, Please admite estas formas de jugar y crea incerteza sobre lo que consigues con tus acciones. No solo te pide que te impliques, también te pide que te posiciones. Y eso es algo que muy pocos juegos han conseguido.

Monaco: What’s yours is mine (PC, Mac, Xbox 360)
Que un juego de sigilo haya conseguido robarme el corazón, a mi que tengo un muñeco vudú con la foto de Sam Fisher, tiene mucho mérito. Claro que Monaco no es el aburrido sigilo de nuestros días, Monaco es el loco sigilo de nuestros padres. Un Bonanza Bros. esquizofrénico en perspectiva cenital donde la elección de personaje cambia totalmente las partidas en solitario y la elección de compañeros hace único cada encuentro multijugador, un claro testimonio de su exquisito diseño. Un diseño que resiste hacer con él lo que quieras. Da igual que juegues como un maestro de la infiltración, como un bruto descerebrado o como cualquier cosa intermedia, Monaco siempre tiene algún reto que ofrecerte. Sobre todo en sus emocionantes partidas multijugador, donde pasamos de planear un golpe al milímetro a gritar y correr como pollos sin cabeza. Y todo ello sin salir de uno de los juegos más divertidos del año.

DmC – Devil May Cry (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
Muchos pusieron el grito en el cielo cuando se anunció esta nueva reimaginación de la saga, pero lo cierto es que había perdido fuelle con su última entrega. Prejuicios sobre el rediseño aparte, Ninja Theory ha dado la talla con un juego con personalidad propia, una jugabilidad sólida, y unos apartados técnico y sonoro más que notables. Y lo dice un fan acérrimo de las aventuras clásicas de Dante. Este título sigue manteniendo la chuleria, el genio y figura, en una reformulación de la historia que ya se nos contó en la primera y tercera entrega y que cumple con creces. Y espero que, por favor, este 2014 nos traiga una continuación, porque Ninja Theory y los Sparda parece que aún tengan mucho que decir.

Tomb Raider (PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3)
Tengo que confesar que el título que más he jugado de la saga Tomb Raider es el arcade que apareció hace unos años en XBLA y PSN, donde Lara iba acompañada de una suerte de guerrero azteca. Más allá de eso, observé las aventuras de la arqueóloga desde la distancia; sin embargo, mi primera aproximación a la saga principal no ha podido ser más satisfactoria. El nuevo Tomb Raider es probablemente el título que más he disfrutado este pasado año. Este título, que yo califico como un Resident Evil 4 hormonado, cuenta una historia insulsa sobre los orígenes de las aventuras de Lara pero sirve para que desatemos nuestro lado salvaje sobreviviendo en una isla inhóspita y escapando de una secta al estilo de «Los Otros» de la serie Lost en el que el arco será nuestro mejor amigo, casi como si fuese un simulador de Rambo. Uno de mis destacados de este año, sin duda alguna.

Grand Theft Auto V (PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3)
Con este juego me encuentro en un caso similar al de Tomb Raider, ya que GTA V es el primer juego de la saga que completo. A mi parecer todos y cada uno de los aspectos de esta experiencia son sobresalientes, empezando por un mapa gargantuesco por el que nos daremos una y mil vueltas, realizando misiones, practicando deportes o simplemente disfrutando de las vistas de una ciudad de Los Santos que deja con la boca abierta. Jugablemente arregla el sistema de checkpoints de anteriores entregas y ofrece un abanico de posibilidades muy amplio, con vehículos, armas y vestimentas para todos los gustos. Vuelven las archiconocidas emisoras de radio, con una selección musical impresionante. Y a todo esto, han añadido un modo online en constante crecimiento que, a pesar de unos inicios nefastos, promete dar mucho de qué hablar este 2014.

Dead Space 3 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
El ya lejano 2008 significó la vuelta de un género que se había diluido con el paso del tiempo: el survival horror. El primer Dead Space supuso una vuelta de tuerca y un soplo de aire fresco que muchos aplaudieron. Su buena acogida propició la aparición de una segunda y tercera parte que siguieron la estela del original haciendo de nudo y desenlace de su historia, al menos, a falta de saber que hace EA con la franquicia. En esta —de momento— última entrega, se recupera en gran medida el espíritu del primer capítulo y se amplía el universo que envuelve a Isaac Clarke. Más armas, más enemigos grandes y escenarios, casquería y tiroteos a escombros.

Tales of Xillia (PlayStation 3)
Sinceramente, llevo varios días haciendo repaso mental de 2013 y una parte de mí me dice que no ha sido un buen año. No obstante, pensándolo en detalle, sí que hemos podido disfrutar —sobre todo yo— de más y mejores juegos que el pasado año. No me gustaría pecar de poco crítico al ensalzar como juego del año la primera opción que se me venga a la cabeza (Dishonored), pero, tras mucho pensar, sí ha habido un juego que he disfrutado especialmente este año.

Tales of Xillia, para PlayStation 3, me ha recordado este año por qué la industria japonesa del videojuego era un referente en generaciones pasadas y por qué el género de los JRPG sigue mereciendo la pena. Una estética muy cuidada, como si de un anime se tratase, una banda sonora memorable, un sistema de combate dinámico y profundo a la par que accesible y, sobre todo, unos personajes tremendamente carismáticos. No ha habido mayor goce en mis partidas de Tales of Xillia que el que me proporcionaban los skits, pequeñas escenas que extendían la personalidad de cada personaje y, en definitiva, los ha convertido en algo más allá de un nombre y un porrón de estadísticas y numeritos con tendencia al infinito. Felicidades, Tales of Xillia, has sido el único juego del género, junto con Persona 4 Golden, que ha sido capaz de engancharme hasta el final, e incluso me conseguiste convencer de volver a terminarte una y otra vez. No todos lo consiguen.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
Mención especial aparte merecen Metal Gear Rising, el aborto de Kojima Productions tan hábilmente recogido, resucitado y encolerizado por Platinum Games, que demuestra que en cuestión de beat’em ups, ni Capcom, ni Tecmo Koei, ni ninguno. Platinum Games sabe, como nadie, ofrecer una jugabilidad de vértigo, trepidante hasta el último momento, tremendamente especializada y, sobre todo, satisfactoria para con el jugador que se tome la molestia de pulir sus habilidades hasta el extremo con el mando. Además, cortar a un «Metal Gear Ray» con hard rock de fondo… ¿qué más se puede pedir?

Tearaway (Playstation Vita)
En último lugar, quiero recordar también a Tearaway. Puede resultar extraño en una selección de JoDA ya que este título parece albergar las peores características deseables para una selección tan elitista. Tearaway es un juego de plataformas orientado a todos los públicos, salido para la consola que menos parece interesar actualmente a jugadores y desarrolladores y que, además y evidentemente, ¡es para una consola portátil! Aun así, Media Molecule nos enseña que, para hacernos disfrutar con un juego, no necesitan una licencia oficial o ser secuela de. Nos enseñan cuán divertido es dejar a un lado la vergüenza, olvidarnos de los permanentes colores marrones de los juegos de hoy en día y de sus escenas cada vez más truculentas. Que puede existir desafío al hacer algo tan simple como recoger confeti, o enfrentarnos a enemigos que son simples recortes de periódico. En definitiva, un videojuego en estado puro.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 (Nintendo 3DS)
Para finalizar, otro juego que me sorprendió gratamente fue Luigi’s Mansion 2, para Nintendo 3DS. Esta franquicia me resulta tremendamente extraña. En mi cabeza, es poco más que una copia o parodia de los survival horror que tanto éxito cosecharon a finales de los noventa, dicho de otra manera: un Resident Evil cutre, malo y que llega tarde. No podía estar más equivocado, cuando años después me hice con una copia del original para Game Cube por un euro.

Ahora podemos disfrutar de su segunda parte en Nintendo 3DS, que mantiene el mismo espíritu pero de una manera mucho más fragmentada que promueve sesiones de juego más cortas en niveles más simples, no por ello menos complicados. He de decir que os estaría mintiendo si os dijera que me cautivó por su historia; resulta que Luigi’s Mansion 2 se ha convertido en un juego que siempre he de llevar encima por su genial multijugador. La experiencia de jugar de manera cooperativa con hasta tres amigos más y buscar todos juntos a los ectochuchos o acabar con todos los malditos fantasmas antes del límite de tiempo es tremendamente divertido, todo un desafío y siempre entretenido. Y lo mejor: al jugar a Luigi’s Mansion 2 no pondréis en peligro vuestra amistad… malditas conchas azules…

Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita, Playstation 2)
Este es, con seguridad, el juego en el que más tiempo he invertido durante el pasado año. Mi «Yakuza 3» de 2013. Un título en el que, al finalizar, hasta me ha dado pena despedirme de todos esos personajes pese a saber que volverán en Persona 4 Arena, y en Persona Q u otros. Un juego de rol japonés que pega una patada, y bien fuerte, a los que dicen que los juegos de rol japonés ya no dan más de sí. Su sistema de combate es divertido, la historia permanece interesante y consigue que sus personajes sean memorables. Es cierto que se trata de un redux y que el original es de 2008, pero incorpora suficientes mejoras como para que aparezca en esta lista ahora.

Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)
Nintendo ha lanzado el mejor Mario posible… y parece que solo para ver como ni de esta manera crecen las ventas de Wii U más allá de su país de origen. Un juego bonito, lleno de ideas frescas, con contenido para ser amortizado de la manera que cada uno prefiera, y con un lenguaje repleto del dominio ancestral en el diseño que tiene Nintendo en sus juegos.

Dragons Crown (PlayStation 3, PS Vita)
El mejor homenaje posible al subgénero yo contra el mundo de ambientación Conan el Bárbaro. Con guiños hacia Golden Axe, Dungeons & Dragons y hasta a los Monty Python, el equipo liderado por George Kamitani se ha empeñado en demostrar que se puede seguir haciendo buenos, y rentables, beat ‘em ups. Y podemos darle las gracias por mostrárnoslo de una manera tan clara.

The Wonderful 101 (Wii U)
The Wonderful 101 es una demostración, plena, de lo que puede hacer un equipo talentoso cuando lo único en lo que se tienen que preocupar es en hacer lo que quieren. Su título es fresco, divertido, rápido y tiene un aspecto impecable. Para algunos es un poco duro en algunos momentos pero no dudo ni lo más mínimo que esa dureza es real y premeditada, tal vez para separar el grano de la paja.

Bravely Default (Nintendo 3DS)
La última sorpresa del año. Un juego de rol que, de primeras, parece un Final Fantasy más, pero que, una vez se ha comenzado, te alegra la vista con su hermoso uso del 3D para, posteriormente, mostrarte una historia mucho más profunda de lo que parece a priori. Mantiene un elenco de personajes bastante variados, trae un sistema de combate con algunas novedades interesantes y, además, una submecánica que deriva, por así decirlo, de todos los cometiempos estilo Farmville.

Rayman Legends (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita, Wii U, PC)
Si bien es cierto que este año han aparecido varios plataformas meritorios de tener una mención aquí, entre otros títulos de gran calibre como Super Mario 3D World, finalmente mi favorito ha sido Rayman Legends. Razones tales como sus brillantes y vívidos gráficos, recargados de detalles hechos con amor; las ganas de cantar, cabecear y rocanrolear al ritmo de la música; o la adicción de machacar los botones una y otra vez por sus niveles diseñados de forma exquisita; serían perfectamente válidas pero la que esgrimo es mucho más sencilla: cada vez que lo juego me divierte. Y es que, después de todo, divertirse suele ser la principal razón por la que la gente juega, y Rayman Legends no sólo cumple con ello, es excelso en hacer reír.
